モンキー･パンチはあくまでルパンを「大泥棒」として描きあげたが、アニメや映画などで「心優しいルパン」という設定になってしまい、少なからずショックを受けている。アニメではモンキー･パンチ本人が初めて監督を務めたとき、「敵を後ろから刺す」というシーンでディレクターに「ルパンはそんなキャラではない。」と言われ、作者であるにも関わらず却下されてしまった。
