文章の中の、ここの箇所は切り捨てたらよいものか、それとも、このままのほうがよいものか、途方にくれた場合には、必ずその箇所を切り捨てなければいけない。いわんや、その箇所に何か書き加えるなど、もってのほかというべきであろう。


これは、極上の文章上達法というか、小説家でなくても、書類やメールを書く、あらゆる職業人に通じる戒めになる。かくいう私は、太宰治が言う「もってのほか」をよくやってしまって字数オーバーになる物書きなので、改めて肝に銘じることにする。

ところで、太宰治が書いたこの文章には小見出しがついている。
それがまたすごい。
一切のムダがそぎ落とされている。

兵法。

太宰治にとって、「途方にくれた場合には、必ずその箇所を切り捨てなければいけない」は文章を書くうえでの兵法だったのだ。
